Music of the Celts

The music of the Celts (ancestors of the Irish, Scottish and Welsh) has long held a fascination for me. A large part of my ethnic heritage is rooted among these traditions, and dulcimers, while not native to these cultures, have become intimately connected with this music. Over the years I have learned the tunes in this book from written collections, from recordings, at lively jam sessions, from one-to-one swaps—trading tunes with other musicians—and even from the soundtracks for Saturday morning cartoons watched while I was a child!

We'll sample several of the Celtic Tune Types:

Airs,

Ballads,

Reels,

Jigs (both single and double),

Hornpipes,

Strathspeys and

Slip Jigs.

I was blessed to be an accompanist for the McTeggart Irish Dancers in Fort Collins, CO and was able to watch the tunes I already love to play come to life in the feet of the dancers.

Celtic Ornamentation

Comparing and learning from the ornaments of fiddling & piping, we'll learn both where and when to play them.
